Cat5E Cat6 Cat6A 8P8C Pass through Ethernet Plug Network Connector RJ45

Ethernet Plug (RJ45 Connector)

An RJ45 plug is the standard modular connector crimped onto the end of an Ethernet cable to create a patch cable, allowing it to interface with network ports on devices, wall jacks, and switches.

Specification

  • Standard: Formally known as an 8P8C (8 Position, 8 Conductor) modular plug. The term 'RJ45' is the common name for its use in networking.

  • Contacts: Has 8 gold-plated pins (or contacts) that correspond to the 8 wires inside a twisted-pair Ethernet cable (Cat5e and above).

  • Wiring Schemes: Terminated according to standardized pinout patterns, primarily T568A or T568B. T568B is the most common scheme in commercial and residential installations. Both are functionally identical as long as used consistently on both ends of a cable.

  • Cable Compatibility: Must match the cable type:

    • For solid conductor cable (used for in-wall installation), use an RJ45 plug designed for solid cable.

    • For stranded conductor cable (used for flexible patch cords), use an RJ45 plug designed for stranded cable. Using the wrong type can lead to poor connectivity.

  • Category Performance: Connectors are rated for specific cable categories (e.g., Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat8) and must be used with cable of the same or higher rating to ensure the link's performance. A Cat6a plug is designed to maintain higher frequencies with less crosstalk.

  • Shielding: Available in unshielded (UTP) and shielded (FTP/STP) versions. Shielded plugs have metal housing that contacts the cable's shield, providing a continuous ground path for EMI protection.

Advantage

  • Universal Standardization: Provides a universal, interoperable physical interface for virtually all wired network devices worldwide.

  • Simple Termination: Relatively easy to install onto a cable with a standard crimping tool, allowing for custom-length cable creation on-site.

  • Reliable Connection: When properly crimped, it provides a secure, gas-tight connection that is resistant to vibration and accidental disconnection.

  • Cost-Effective and Ubiquitous: Extremely inexpensive and readily available, making it the most economical connector for Ethernet networks.

  • Modular and Flexible: Enables the creation of custom patch cables to precisely fit any installation need.

Application

  • Creating Patch Cables: The primary use is terminating bulk cable to create custom-length patch cords for connecting computers, printers, IP phones, and other devices to wall outlets or network switches.

  • Device Termination: Found on the end of the integrated cable for most consumer network devices (routers, gaming consoles, smart TVs).

  • Field Termination in Infrastructure: Used to put connectors directly on the ends of horizontal or backbone cabling runs in telecommunications rooms or at work area outlets (though keystone jacks in wall plates are more common for fixed outlets).

  • Testing and Troubleshooting: Used to make test leads and connection loops for network technicians to verify cable performance and diagnose link problems.
